Trees give off oxygen that we need to breathe. Trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. Many species depend on trees for habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals.

Rye Island is home to one of the world richest sweet water reserves. Increased periods of rain and rising levels of the Danube require increased attention to floods. Dense lowland forest line on the banks of the Danube gives the Little Danube an atmosphere reminiscent of a tropical rainforest. The soils have ample moisture and nutrients thanks to frequently flooding. Unfortunately, intact lowland forests can only be found currently in a narrow strip along the Little Danube. The trees have been cut and replaced with other, non-native species, which produce lot of harm to flora of the region. Help us plant and conserve the native tree species, such as white willow, brittle willow, white poplar, black poplar and alder. Planting new trees and forests will strengthen our natural dykes and will ensure future generations can enjoy god’s most precious gift.

One of the main purposes of Kukkonia NGO is to protect and preserve the natural resources, sacral monuments, and traditions of Rye Island. These gifts we must treasure as one day we ought to hand them over fully preserved to the future generations.
